The powder room

The first floor powder room, located off the entry hall, was finished in panelled Giallo Sienna marble to match the Living Room fireplace stone. Art glass provides privacy and a constantly changing light source in the room. Marble mosaics on the floor complete this intricate composition.

the living room

it appears that the primary room in this grand home was once divided into two parlors, perhaps a study and a reception room. However, they are both long gone. During the 50’s and 60’s the house was purportedly divided into 11 rental units, and these rooms were destroyed. Lacking any physical or photographic evidence, we created a grand space trimmed in mahogany. Art glass laylights were designed and built to lighten the deep set space, and glass tiles were installed above the picture rail to provide light-reflecting surfaces to brighten the space. Fireplace surrounds designed with motifs from the stairhall were fabricated in Italy of Giallo Sienna stone. Art glass windows were designed to provide privacy without reducing light levels. Large mahogany encased structural beams provide support for the second floor above.

Aside

The entry hall (and dining room) is all that remains of the original house. Even then, the stairhall once included an elevator that was placed in the center of the hall! The elevator was removed (we don’t know when) and the stair repaired. The trim is all plain-sawn red oak, and the floors are white oak finished in tung oil.
